Dorothy Louden Counselling

About me. Dot2020

As a youth leader in my late teens I saw the trauma that many adolescents had encountered during their early years. I saw the lack of self esteem which prevented them from having fulfilled lives. This resulted in a desire to help people make positive changes in their lives and so I trained with the Samaritans when I was 18. I went into nursing when I was 21 and worked in occupational health within a large factory in Belfast. This, alongside managing a counselling service within a large FE/HE College, has given me a good grounding in the stresses which can occur within a large organisation.

I began my work as a counsellor in the voluntary field, combining this with working as a nurse one night a week, and raising a family. Several years ago I began working as a paid counsellor for Living Springs charity (now known as The Well)within the West Midlands.

Areas of Specialism

During my years of counselling I have had the privilege of seeing people who have experienced a wide variety of difficulties, overcome these problems and move forward. Some of the more frequent, but still traumatic, have been: physical, sexual and emotional abuse; anxiety, stress and depression; critical incidents; family relationships and friendships; and identity issues in young people.

Personal Approach

I use an Integrative model of counselling. This means that I don't use one way of counselling as I believe that people are individuals and that no one model can satisfy every individual.

Ultimately, I believe that my counselling philosophy and approach parallels my personal experience of life and endears me to seek to offer an approach to clients which also mirror their own personality and learning style.
